Lateral Flow Testing
Mass Testing Information for Parents/Carers and Students

General Information

As part of the national initiative to use lateral flow device tests, we aim to help staff and students remain in school safely. Up to a third of those with COVID show no symptoms. The lateral flow testing plan will help to reduce the spread of the virus and it will enable us to have students in school more often. The test is voluntary but everyone is encouraged to take the test so that we can use it in the most effective way.

Consent form and privacy notice

Parents and students need to consent to the test being administered. Please read the Privacy Notice and complete the relevant consent form, both of which can be found via the link below.

Please complete the consent form in order for us to be able to set up test appointments. Your child will need to have two tests, taken between three and five days apart. The proposed plan is detailed below. Any changes to this will be publicised as soon as possible.

If you DO NOT wish to give your consent, please email giving your child’s full name and year group.

The Proposed Plan:

Our proposed plan… this is subject to change but we will keep you updated:

  1. Parents/carers need to provide consent for their child to have the tests. Please see above.
  2. You will be notified of your child’s test dates and times
  3. Students will register at the dedicated reception in the main hall on the day and time of their test.
  4. Students will complete a supervised test
  5. The testing processor will analyse the result and interpret the result as negative, positive or invalid.
  6. Students, parents/carers will be informed if the result is positive. If the test result is invalid, students will need to repeat the test. In line with government guidance if the test result is negative students, parents/carers will not be informed. Students with negative results will be expected to attend school as normal from their designated start date.
  7. Students that test positive will need to take a PCR test.
  8. The test process takes approximately 5 minutes including registration and conducting the test.
  9. The results of the test will be ready in approximately 30 minutes.
  10. Students will take a second test and repeat this process 3 to 5 days after the first test.

Our testing process at Tottington High School

Our rolling programme of testing staff and students is underway. We aim to test everyone (consent given) every 5 school days until further notice. When your child comes back into school, they will receive their first test and will then follow the same rolling 5-day testing programme.

Questions you may have

What if my child tests positive on the lateral flow test?

  • Parents/carers of students who test positive will be informed
  • Students will need to take a further ‘PCR test’ (similar to those done in local and regional testing sites) on the same day (or as soon as possible). Parents will be required to arrange these.
  • Until the PCR result is obtained, the student will need to self isolate.
  • If the PCR test returns a positive result you will have to self-isolate and follow the guidance from NHS Test and Trace.

What if a close contact tests positive?

A close contact of someone in school who has tested positive will be able to be in school as long as they agree to be tested daily for 7 days, and as long as each test is negative. If a student does not wish to be tested then they need to self isolate for the required length of time.

What if my child develops symptoms?

If your child develops symptoms, they should self isolate immediately and arrange a PCR test
