HSC and Child Development KS4 Overview
Child Development
For students to understand the importance of creating safe environments, meeting the nutritional needs and supporting the development of children they must understand and where this began. By studying the exam unit first, it gives students the foundation knowledge and understanding of preconception health and reproduction, antenatal care and preparation for birth, postnatal checks, postnatal care and the conditions of development and childhood illnesses and a child safe environment. It also allows students to have opportunities to recall this knowledge over a two year period and where appropriate within the non-examination assessments to ensure knowledge is mastered before they sit their final exam.
Health and Social Care
The three components are taught in order as they focus on the assessment of applied knowledge which are all essential to developing a basis for progression. Therefore students need to achieve all components in order to achieve the qualification. Furthermore the components are interrelated for example, component 3 builds directly on knowledge learnt in components 1 and 2 and enables learning to be brought together and applied to realistic contexts.
Child Development
In Child Development lessons at Tottington you will see an engaging environment which begins with recall and retrieval of prior learning. The learning intentions are always made clear with a big question which students will explore within the lesson through information being presented to the class followed by a independent learning. The independent learning section of the lesson will allow students to explore their learning outcomes through a range of pedagogical tasks/activities such as analysing case studies, research tasks and group work. Each lesson will end with a reflection task to consolidate key learning in that lesson. This allows us to see how students have understood the learning outcomes on a lesson by lesson basis to address any misconceptions in their understanding in future lessons.

Child Development
We assess learning in Child Development each lesson through a range of formative assessment strategies such as questioning and quizzes. Checking for understanding of the learning outcomes is a vital component of all lessons to allow students to articulate their understanding. This is then recorded weekly on a tracker to monitor if students are working towards, on or above their predicted grade. There are three mandatory units which are assessed as followed: RO57 - externally assessed examination, R058 and R059 - internally non-examined assessments (coursework). Within the R058 and R059 units, there are sub-topics which outline what students need to learn and understand in order to complete their assignment tasks. After delivery of each sub-topic students will complete a practice assessment task based of assignment style tasks to gain further evidence of students working at grades (WAG). Students will also sit MOCK examinations in Year 10 and Year 11 to prepare for their final examination.
