As well as being concerned for everyone within the school, we at Tottington High School also like to feel that we try to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
Again there is a strong tradition of help and concern for the elderly in the community. At Christmas, the prefects raise money and collect items of food etc. and make up Christmas hampers to be distributed to the elderly who live in the Tottington area.
Each year the student body selects three main charities, one international, one national and one local. The vast majority of fundraising go to these charities. Other charities that have been helped include the Royal National Institute for the Blind, MacMillan Nurses, Rainbow Trust, Dr. Barnado’s, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Greenmount Wild Bird Hospital, Save the Children, Oxfam, Age Concern, Bury Hospice, Peel Lions, N.S.P.C.C. and U.N.I.C.E.F., Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Appeal and Derian House Children’s Charity.
Our Community links also extend across the globe, and our work in this area was recognised in July 2010, when we received International Schools Award Status, a very prestigious award. The school orchestra and choir give their services to the community and have played at local church events and homes for the elderly. Students also go into the community to give practical help to the elderly and disabled.
Competitions are held within all subjects, and within and across all year groups. These engender great enthusiasm among the students who are called upon to show initiative and enterprise in preparing for the competitions.
We have established a reputation for public speaking having achieved success in inter-school competitions for our team of speakers.
